About Hastings-Sunrise
Hastings-Sunrise is one of Vancouver's most underrated neighborhoods, offering genuine affordability, strong community ties, and the charm of East Vancouver culture. Historically known as 'Little Italy,' the area was settled by Italian immigrants in the early 20th century, and this heritage remains visible in local businesses, bakeries, and community events.
In 2026, Hastings-Sunrise has evolved into a diverse, family-oriented neighborhood that appeals to young families, working professionals seeking value, and long-time residents who appreciate the slower pace compared to downtown. The neighborhood is anchored by Hastings Park—a massive 162-acre greenspace that's home to the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition), Playland amusement park, and the Pacific Coliseum.
The housing stock is a mix of character homes from the 1920s-1950s, newer townhomes, and a growing number of laneway houses. The neighborhood feels authentically residential, with tree-lined streets, mom-and-pop shops along Hastings Street, and a strong sense of community. While it lacks the trendiness of nearby Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise offers 20-30% lower rent prices and genuine neighborhood character.
May not be ideal for:
- • Nightlife enthusiasts (limited bar scene)
- • Those seeking trendy cafes and boutiques
- • UBC commuters (45-60 min)
- • People who need walkability to downtown amenities

History & Culture
Hastings-Sunrise was developed in the early 1900s as a working-class neighborhood for immigrants, particularly Italian families who settled in the area creating 'Little Italy.' The neighborhood was named after nearby Hastings Mill and the eastern sunrise views. During WWII, Hastings Park was controversially used as a detention center for Japanese Canadians. Post-war, the area became home to the PNE (established 1910) and working-class families. The Italian heritage remains strong today, visible in bakeries, delis, and the nearby Italian Cultural Centre.
Demographics: Diverse and multicultural with significant Italian, Chinese, and Filipino populations. Many young families (30% of households with children) and long-time residents. Mix of homeowners and renters. Median household income is moderate ($65,000-$85,000). The neighborhood has a strong sense of community with active neighborhood associations.
